Foundation Excavation and Gravel-Raft Preparation Explained

The performance of a slab or gravel-raft foundation starts below the concrete. Accurate excavation, water management and controlled aggregate placement give the foundation contractor the platform described in the engineer's design.

What is the subgrade?

The subgrade is the prepared natural ground or engineered fill beneath the foundation build-up. It needs to be at the right level, consistent enough for the design and protected from unnecessary disturbance. Over-excavation can mean extra imported material; under-excavation can leave no room for the specified layers.

Soft spots, buried topsoil, uncontrolled fill or wet material may need to be removed. The required response should come from the project engineer or geotechnical professional rather than being guessed on site.

Why gravel-raft preparation is precise work

A gravel-raft system normally uses specified aggregate layers, reinforcing elements and concrete components to distribute loads. The earthworks scope can include:

  • Excavating to the design level and dimensions
  • Removing unsuitable material where directed
  • Installing geotextile or other separation material if specified
  • Placing approved aggregate in controlled layer thicknesses
  • Compacting each layer with suitable equipment
  • Allowing for services, edge details and foundation penetrations
  • Coordinating density testing or engineer inspections

Moisture can change the job quickly

Exposed subgrade can soften when rain is allowed to pond. A planned job uses temporary falls, sumps, pumps or staged excavation as appropriate to keep water away from critical areas. Opening only the area that can be completed and protected is often more reliable than exposing the entire platform too early.

Compaction is a process, not a final pass

Running a compactor over the surface does not prove the full depth is suitable. Engineered fill is placed in layers that match the material, moisture condition and compaction plant. Where the design requires testing, results should be recorded before the next stage covers the work.

  • Current foundation and geotechnical drawings
  • Required excavation level and approximate platform area
  • Aggregate type, layer depths and testing requirements
  • Expected undercut allowance, if known
  • Truck and machine access
  • Location of spoil, stockpiles and imported material
  • Who provides pumps, survey set-out and inspections
